The recording of a text found in a manuscript without normalizing or modernizing features such as spelling, punctuation and grammar. Regular transcription uses the same character set as the original text in the manuscript. Because texts in manuscripts may have gaps or corrections, certain symbols (brackets, parentheses, etc.) are used to indicate changes to the exact appearance of the text in the manuscript.
