Apologetics or apologetic writings are works that explain a religion, denomination, sect, etc., and defend it from external criticism. They attempt to respond to objections raised to beliefs and/or practices, either by directly addressing another author or text, or by addressing common arguments. Apologetic writings are very closely related to and often combined with polemics, which are aggressive, forcefully presented arguments, often disputing a policy or opinion.
