Papyrus

A writing support made by laying strips of the stem of the papyrus plant in two layers, perpendicular to one another, and pressing the two layers together.

A writing support made by laying strips of the stem of the papyrus plant in two layers, perpendicular to one another, and pressing the two layers together. Normally formed into rolls, though codices of mixed papyrus and parchment are found. Mostly replaced as a writing support in Western Europe by the end of late antiquity.
