An initial embellished with elaborate lines of ink, very often combining or alternating red and blue inks.

An initial embellished with elaborate lines of ink, very often combining or alternating red and blue inks. Pen-flourished initials are typical of pregothic and Gothic manuscripts. Particularly fine examples may be called Filigree initials.
