The words or symbols added to the text of a manuscript to clarify or expand on its meaning.

Words or symbols added to the text of a manuscript to clarify or expand on its meaning. Glosses may appear between the lines of the main text or in the margins around it. They may be as simple as single-word translations or dots signaling word order, or as extensive as a full commentary or translation of the text.
